Finland: 150 Dualsun hybrid panels at the heart of EXCESS, a European energy demonstrator

  • 2023
  • Helsinki, Finlande
  • Power output : 60 kWp
  • Panels : 150 hybrids

Innovation in the building sector plays a key role in reducing our carbon footprint. At Dualsun, we designed the SPRING hybrid solar panel to meet these challenges: producing both electricity and heat with unrivalled efficiency. Today, we are proud to see our technology integrated into a major European project: EXCESS .

This program, supported by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 initiative, brings together 21 partners from 8 countries to transform near-zero consumption buildings into positive energy buildings (PEB). Over a four-year period, EXCESS is implementing four innovative demonstrators to prove that it is possible to build buildings that produce more renewable energy than they consume, in all European climate zones.

An innovative demonstrator in Finland with Dualsun

Among these demonstrators, the Kalasatama BEPOS building in Helsinki, inaugurated in 2023, perfectly illustrates this ambition. Located in a booming district, this eight-storey mixed-use building (residential, commercial and gastronomic) pushes back the limits of energy efficiency, even in northern climates.

Its hybrid energy system combines:

  • Semi-deep geothermal wells (3000 m of MuoviTech tubes in 5 deep boreholes 600 m deep)
  • Gebwell – puhdasta lämpöä heat pumps (140 kW)
  • Photovoltaic panels
  • 150 Dualsun SPRING hybrid solar panels (300 m2)

The integration of our SPRING hybrid solar panels plays a key role in providing additional renewable heat to the geothermal system, enabling ..:

🔥 Optimized heating and hot water production
💨 Improved ventilation performance
⚡ Intelligent energy management with two-way electricity exchange

Spectacular results

The results are spectacular: even in the middle of a Finnish winter, the heat pump achieves a COP of 5.0, and the building operates at positive energy, producing 23.6 kWh of solar electricity per square metre per year, for just 22.6 kWh of electrical requirements for the heat pump and its auxiliaries.

Through demonstrations in four different climates, EXCESS validates and shares reproducible energy solutions to accelerate the transition of the building sector in Europe.

With this project, Dualsun confirms its commitment to solar innovation and proves that autonomous, sustainable buildings are possible today.
